About Us

From a Love of 'Steamers'

Our family owned business grew in part from the late Lord Wakefield’s interests in the ‘steamers’ which sail on Ullswater in the north-east of the English Lake District and the narrow gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway in the west.

Inevitably, retailing played a part in running two popular visitor attractions, but in some ways it was peripheral to the successful development of the business. The construction of a new pier-house at the ‘Steamers’ in the late 1990s, the acquisition of the National Park’s tourist information centre in Pooley Bridge at the northern end of the lake, and a brand new station building at the Railway’s Dalegarth terminus which opened in 2005, afforded the space to invest in retail gifts to an extent impossible to achieve before.

In 2007, the company negotiated a license to trade as Peter Rabbit and Friends™ and currently operate shops under this name in the Beatrix Potter heartlands of Bowness-on-Windermere and Hawkshead, as well as in the delightful market town of Keswick and the beautiful, historic City of York.

Already stockists of Thomas the Tank Engine ranges at the Railway, the development of classic character based product afforded the opportunity for us to offer a near unique mix of gifts to locals and visitors alike. Aware that many holidaymakers do not return to the Lake District every year and that internet shoppers’ might never have the chance to enjoy the area’s delights and visit our shops, we decided to share our retail offer with everyone through the creation of our own E-shop.

rabbitrabbitgifts might be new on the scene, but hopefully we can demonstrate through our history, our retail outlets and our already proven selection of products for the site, our pedigree of customer service. Welcome to rabbitrabbitgifts. We hope you like what you see and quickly become a valued ‘regular’ on the site.
